James was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders in 1910 and served with them during World War I. James was severely wounded and transferred to the Royal Air Force for the remainder of the war. In 1920 he came to Canada and lived in Saskatchewan for a few years. He filed on NE 14-72-1-W6 and SE 23-72-1-W6 in 1927. James died following a surgery on February 6, 1931.
