Biographical Sketch

Clarence W. Shields was born February 19, 1904 in Okotoks, Alberta to parents John Andrew and Elizabeth (Bourque) Shields. He grew up on the family farm making his way to Grande Prairie, Alberta when he was twenty-four years old.

Marie Albertine Nora Dionne was born January 8, 1907 in Pincher Creek, Alberta to parents Baptiste and Edith (Cyr) Dionne. Nora graduated from nursing school in Edmonton, and started working in Grande Prairie at the Kathryn Prittie Hospital in 1928.

Clarence and Nora were married in 1929 and settled back in Grande Prairie. Nora continued to work as a nurse and Clarence worked as a sales broker. Their children John Wendele (Jack), Elizabeth Helen (Betty), William Clarence (Bill) and Thomas Dionne (Tom) grew up in Grande Prairie. Clarence passed away in 1956 at the age of 48 years.

Nora spent many years involved in nursing in Grande Prairie starting with the Kathryn Prittie Hospital. Nora was an office nurse for Doctor Carlyle and in 1954 she returned full-time to working at the hospital. She was named assistant matron with the Grande Prairie City Hospital and later promoted to Matron. Nora’s also excelled at singing winning awards for her solo performances in local music festivals. Nora was also involved with organization such as the Catholic Women’s League, Alberta Registered Nurses Association and the United Commercial Travelers auxiliary. Nora passed away in 1966 at the age of 59 years.

Clarence and Nora’s oldest son Jack Shields, became involved in the military after WWII as a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, 1st Battalion. With the outbreak of the Korean War Jack joined the 2nd Battalion and did some training in the United States. Jack travelled to Korea aboard the ship Pte. Joe P. Matinez in 1950 and later fought in the battle at Kap’yong. Jack served for 18 months in Korea and attained the rank of Sergeant. Once home he was promoted to Warrant Officer and before retiring from the army. Jack went on to become Assistant Superintendent of School for Northern Alberta and became MP for Athabaska region. Jack was married to his wife Pat and had three sons. Jack died in 2004 and is buried in the Grande Prairie Cemetery.

Clarence and Nora’s youngest son Tom Shields was a student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Grande Prairie, and continued his education in Edmonton becoming a teacher. Tom’s first job was in Banff, and after some years he came back to Grande Prairie in the position of Administration Consultant and then Director in the Regional Office, Department of Education. Tom also was very involved in real estate, building two successful brokerages. Tom served on many real estate boards as well, he was the founding member of the Real Estate Council of Alberta, the Grande Prairie Real Estate Board as well as the Alberta and Canadian Real Estate Association. Tom was also involved in the Grande Prairie Kinsmen, the board of Governors for the Grande Prairie Regional College, Stompede board, The Grande Prairie Public School Board, as well as many other boards and organizations in Alberta. Tom was married to Jan Shields and they had three sons. Tom passed away in 2010 and is buried in the Grande Prairie Cemetery.

Custodial History

The records were donated by Jan Shields, wife of Tom Shields and daughter-in-law to Nora and Clarence Shields.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of records relating to the Shields family. The records include Nora Shields’ personal and financial papers, the Shields family tree, early and later photographs from the Shields’ as well as the Dionne family, Jack Shields’ military papers and photographs from his experience as a soldier before and during the Korean War, and some military publications that he collected.

The records have been arranged by the Archivists by content and chronology into the various series and files. The Archivists imposed the order now shown by the records.

The records are divided into five series: Nora Shields Personal Papers, Nora Shields’ Financial Records, Shields’ Family Photographs, Jack Shields Korean War Records, Korean War Publications.

The series consists of personal records of Nora Shields. The series includes a certificate of baptism (1907); a newspaper clipping of Nora’s nurses graduating class; a menu and programme commemorating the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Alberta, held at the Grande Prairie Hotel August 17, 1939; a newspaper clipping of Nora being named Assistant Matron at the Grande Prairie City Hospital (ca.1959); a newspaper clipping of the new Grande Prairie Hospital opening and Nora named as Matron (1961); certificate of a name change from Albertine Nora Dionne to Marie Albertine Nora Dionne (1963); clipping of Nora receiving table decorations for the hospital from the Grande Prairie 4-H clothing club (1964); letter of thanks written by the family of Nora, to the Ladies of the Grande Prairie Hospital Auxiliary for the garden memorial; mass cards as well as flower cards from the funeral of Nora Shields. Series 627.03 Shields Family Tree. — 2002. — 0.5 cm.

The series consists of records relating to the family history of the Shields family. The family tree outline was sent to Jack Shields by Nancy Nitschkie. The tree begins with ancestor Andrew Shields born in 1794 in Co. Cavan, Ireland, he married Mary Coulter and they moved to West Hawkesbury, Prescott Co., Ontario. Andrew and Mary both died there. The descendant report covers the Shields family for the next six generations and was created in 2002. Title based on contents of the series.

Series 627.05 Jack Shields Korean War Records. — 1950-2003. — 3.5 cm of textual records. — 4 photographs.

The series consists of papers relating to Jack Shields’ time in Korea as well as reports and research done at a later time. The records include; a scrapbook with numerous newspaper clippings that describe the various battles and events focused on the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry; two telegrams to Jack’s mother Nora letting her know that Jack is being evacuated to Canada (1951); The Legionary Vol. XXVI No. 10, March 1951. The records also include a poem about Big Jim Stone’s Patricia’s, possibly sung or recited at a reunion; three stamped discharge certificates from the Canadian Army issued to Jack Shields (1948, 1950, 1957). The certificates detail Jack’s service, he achieved the rank of Sergeant as well as receiving the United Nations Service medal and the Korean Medal; statement of service in the Canadian Armed Forces from the Public Archives of Canada (1980); a certificate from the Korean Veterans Association thanking him for his service to their country and declaring him an “Ambassador for Peace” (1980); a copies of Korea War photographs received from the National Archives of Canada (originals found at Library and Archives Canada); statement of service records from the National Archives of Canada (1996); the text on the memorial plaque Canadian at Kap’yong; unit citation for the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry as declared by the United States; nominal roll of 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry April 24/25, 1951; a fifteen page transcription of an interview of Jack’s memories of the battle of Kap’yong which took place at the 45th anniversary of the same event in Winnipeg (1996); certificate from the Korea Veterans Association of Canada authenticating a plate #245 which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Korean War (2000); letter from Hub Gray with a partial Mortar PI Nominal Roll for April 24-25. 1951 Kap’yong as well his research about the same event; a list from Shirley Kolanchey of the Kap’yong vets who pre-registered to attend their 50th anniversary; photocopy of a plaque that was given to Jack Shields by the Korea Veterans Association; a memorial card for Jack Shields (1929-2004). Three publications relating to the Korean War. The publications are; “The Patrician 2002” Volume LIV, A regimental Journal of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry; “2002 Reunion” Hosted by Unit 21, Edmonton, Alberta, Korea Veterans Association of Canada; “Canadian Military Korea Fifty Years Later” Vo. 10 Issue 7, a special commemorative issue of the magazine. There is also a collection of photographs Jack Shields ordered from the National Archives of Canada. The fifty photographs mainly are of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry during the Korean War. The orginal photographs are held at Library and Archives Canada. Title based on contents of the series.
