Agency History
The Grande Prairie Guild of Artists organized in 1983. The charter members had taken a landscape painting class from Robert Guest through Grande Prairie Regional College and wanted to keep painting as a group. The Guild’s first activity was an art show May 15-16, 1983, followed by its first meeting on May 19, 1983. Their objectives at the time were to have a common place to draw, paint, or sketch and to have recognized artists instruct the group through workshops. The first executive was composed of president Yvonne Dickson, secretary Dale Adamson, and treasurer Basil Tidder.
The Guild’s activities included weekly meetings to paint and receive encouragement and feedback from the other members, fieldtrips, sponsorship of numerous workshops in various media, participation in art shows throughout the region, hosting of art shows, operation of the “Art in the Park” program (2002-2004), and participation in fundraisers for other groups such as the Prairie Gallery’s “Dream Auction” and breast cancer’s “Cook for the Cure”.
The Guild’s current purpose is to further its members’ interest in art and to encourage others to participate in the enjoyment of painting. As of 2015, it is still in operation.
Custodial History
The records were donated by Jan Shields, a representative of the Grande Prairie Guild of Artists, in December 2012 and January 2013. The records were kept by several club members, including Yvonne Dickson, Dale Syrota, Louanne Hart, Valerie Ditch, and Tina Dale.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of records relating to the operation and activities of the Grande Prairie Guild of Artists. The records include incorporation documents and bylaws, minutes, agreements, financial statements, ledgers, miscellaneous financial records, membership lists, correspondence, newsletters, show and course information, art inventories, artists’ biographies, promotional material, newspaper clippings, photographs and slides of the Guild and its activities, and a video clip profiling the Guild.
The records have been arranged by the Archivists by content and chronology into the various series and files. Because the records came from so many individual sources, the overall original order of the records had been obscured. The Archivists imposed the order now shown by the records.
The records are divided into six series: Administrative Records, Financial Records, Membership, Communications, Programs and Events, and Associated Organizations.
