Note: There are multiple spellings for the surname: Karkonate, Carakonte, Caracote, Karaconte, Grandekotey. The trapper appears to have been illiterate, and therefore the spelling of his name depended on who was writing it.

Administrative history / Biographical sketch

Albert Karkonate, born c. 1900, was a trapper near Pipestone Creek. His address is listed as Sylvester Post Office. He was the registered owner of trap-line #1899, described as follows:

Commencing approx. center east bdry. Sec. 11-59-8-W. 6th and following old pack trail to approx. center W. bdry. Sec. 4-60-R.8 thence following height of land NE to headwaters unnamed Cr. And down east side said creek to Kakwa R.; thence east on south side of Kakwa R. to Prairie Creek approx. center west bdry. Sec. 24-61-6-W.6th. Thence up west side Prairie Cr. to center E. bdry. Sec. 12-60-7-W.6th; thence due south 3 ½ miles to SW cr. Sec. 30-59-6-W.6th; thence SW direct to point of commencement.

Mr. Karkonate also possessed a snaring permit for Trap-Line #7219, in the area of Entrance, Alberta in 1946, and a license for trap-line 4543. Later he was a casual laborer for the Department of Highways in the Province of Alberta in 1957.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of documents regarding trap-lines 1899, 4543 (snaring permit 1807) and 7219; a series of licenses and receipts from various government departments for big game licenses and trap-line renewals from 1942-1965, letters from the departments regarding renewal licenses, a market report from the Little Bros. Fur Sales Agency in 1950, two receipts for groceries and dry goods, and a few documents evidencing his employment as a casual laborer with the Department of Highways in 1957.
