Scope and content:

These records consist of 304 photographs of the community of Hythe collected for the “Memory Lane” display at the Hythe Homecoming in 2016. Subjects include street scenes and buildings in the village from 1929-1967, including the Railway Station, the Grain Elevators, the main streets, and the Pioneer Lodge which were the nucleus for the village; individual businesses that existed in Hythe over the years; Hythe school photographs from 1938 to 1982; sports photographs of basketball, hockey, curling, and speed racing; group photographs of organizations such as the Elks, Royal Purple, Legion, Hythe Homecoming 1979, Hythe Homecoming 1994, and the 1979 History Book Committee; and individual people who lived and worked in Hythe from its establishment in 1929. There are also a few photographs from the farming communities around Hythe, such as Annellen, West Hythe, Molde, Lambert, Glass Lake, Brainard Lake and Demmitt.

Aerial view of the North Star Oil Garage and Dixon Motel. North Star opened and operated by George Dennison from 1956 to 1959. Gordon Mason, Mr. A. W. Pearson, Leroy Heaters, Mel Berlinski, Ric & Penny Peterson, and Sherry Sudnik have been operators of the garage. It is now Tags owned by Sherry Sudnik. Dixon Motel opened in 1949 and was owned by Colin Dixon, Mr. H Tveten, and Mr. L Stickney. It was moved to the Al Greber farm and demolished in about 1988. One of the units was taken out to the Stickney farm and used as a guest house.

The Hythe Car Wash and Laundromat was formed by six businessmen from Hythe in 1969 to encourage new industry and for more people to settle in Hythe. In 1986 Ron Baker purchased the Hythe Car Wash from the Group of 6. In 2009 Ron Baker sold the business to Myles and Amanda Lacey.

Oaky’s Boot & Jean Shack was built in 1981 by Glenn Oakford. After Glenn’s death, Sherry Oakford managed the store.
