“Wilderness Outpost” is “the Fort Vermilion Memoir of Mary B. Lawrence 1898-1907.” Mary (Molly) Lawrence was the wife of Fred S. Lawrence, whose father Erastus in 1879 had established the Irene Training School, “the first genuine attempt by Euro-Canadians to instruct people of the First Nations in the Peace River Country in the ways of farming.” After Fred and Molly were married in 1898, they journeyed up to Fort Vermilion, where Fred would become one of the most publicized promoters of the Peace River Country. During her nine year stay in Fort Vermilion, May kept notes on people, places, events and circumstances which she later included in her memoir: “Keewaitin: God of the North Wind” and which has now been edited and republished as “Wilderness Outpost”. “The manuscript provides a vivid account of life at Fort Vermilion during this time, and reveals much about the interaction of Euro-Canadian settlers, missionaries, traders and others with the resident Metis, Cree and Beaver people. The work also discloses aspects of daily life in the North that are often over-looked in the published accounts of visitors.”

Aboriginal Rights Claims and the Making and Remaking of History, 2016
Book
In Aboriginal Rights Claims and the Making and Remaking of History, Arthur Ray examines how claims-oriented research is often fitted to the existing frames of indigenous rights law and claims legislation and, as a result, has influenced the development of these laws and legislation. Through a comparative study encompassing the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, Ray also explores the ways in which various procedures and settings for claims adjudication have influenced and changed the use of historical evidence, made space for indigenous voices, stimulated scholarly debates about the cultural and historical experiences of indigenous peoples at the time of initial European contact and afterward, and have provoked reactions for politicians and scholars.

Mining and Communities in Northern Canada: History, Politics, and Memory, 2015
Book
For indigenous communities around the glove, mining has been a historical forerunner of colonialism, introducing new and often disruptive settlement patterns and economic arrangements. Although some communities may benefit from and adapt to the wage labour and training opportunities provided by new mining operations, they are also often left to navigate the complicated process of remediating the long-term ecological changes associated with industrial mining. Thus the mining often inscribes colonialsim as a broad set of physical and ecological changes to indigenous lands. Mining and Communities in Norterhn Canada: History, Politiccs, and Memory examines historical and contemporary social, economic, and enrironmental impacts of mining on Aboriginal communtities in northern Canada. Combining oral hstory research with intensive archival study, the contributors juxtapose the perspectives of government and industry with those of local communities. The oral history and ethnographic material provides an extremely significant record of local Aboriginal perspectives on histories of mining and development in their regions.

Together We Survive: Ethnographic Intuitions, Friendships, and Conversations, 2016
Book
Honouring anthropologist Richard J. Preston and his outstanding career with the Crees in northern Quebec, Together We Survive presents new research by Preston’s colleagues, former students, and family members who – like him – have established long-term, respectful research partnerships and friendships with Aboriginal communities. Demonstrating the influential nature of Preston’s collaborative approach on anthropologists in Canada and beyond, the essays in Together We Survive explore development and urbanization, material culture, and conflict. Scholars who conducted research in the 1960s with Crees farther to the south broaden the scope of Preston’s Cree Narrative (2002). A Cree colleague and riend expands on his study of traditional Cree songs. Other essays widen the geographick, historical, and cultrual foci of the book beyond the Quebec Crees, examining the significance of a beaded hood at Red River, in 844, scrutinizing symbols of Anishinaabe identity, and describing the stuggle for Indigenous human rights in the United Nations.
