Administrative history / Biographical sketch

South Peace Regional Archives was established in January 2000 as a project of the Pioneer Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District in response to an active lobby of individuals and organizations. The mandate of the Archives was to promote and encourage the appreciation and study of the history of the south Peace River Country by acquiring, preserving and making accessible to the public, records in any format which reflect the history of this area. These records are collected from individuals individuals, families, businesses, organization, and institutions and, on deposit, from municipal governments. Funding is provided by participating municipalities: City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, and Municipal District of Greenview. After 7 years of operating under the direction under the Museum Society, in July 2007, the South Peace Regional Archives Society was formed.

Scope and content

The collection consists of newspapers relating to the history of the South Peace River Country of Alberta. These were donated by various donors to South Peace Regional Archives after it was established in 2000, and are not associated with a fonds. Newspapers range in date from 1917 to 2014 and include full papers and special inserts.

Series 0506.05: A Little News

Date: 1989-1990 (date of creation)

Scope and content:

A weekly paper published in the late 1980s, early 1990s by “All of Us” Co. The editor was Lynne Ness, with contributing editors David Biltek, Peter Vogan, Sukamar Nayar, Grace Lineman, and Rick Erlendson. In later issues Ranie Arnold, Babe Bonnett, Tim Heimdal and Terry Smith were given credit for graphic design and layout. There were many more contributors. Genevieve Shultz was the business manager and Mark Marcotte was the advertising representative. The vision was that it would contain a little good reading, a little shop talk, a little civic insight, a little product news, a little sound advice, a little bit of this earth, a little sports, a little stage talk, and be a little off the wall, to be taken with a little pinch of salt.

This series is four issues of “The Image”, numbered issue 3-6, volume no. 1, and dating from October 10, 1997 to October 31, 1997. The editor is Paul Croutch, who moved from Dawson Creek to Grande Prairie, and writers include Ken Steigenberger, Jeremy Johnston, and Vaughn Allan.

Issues include political news, such as a Report from the Legislature by Walter Paszkowski, and reports from the Canadian Tax Payers Association. Other topics include Indigneous Peoples, the Downtown Association, travel, community facilities such as SPCA and the Climbing Wall at GPRC, and community events such as the Cancer Jail n’ Bail. There is a fair amount of Sexsmith news, such as articles on the Sexsmith Youth Center, the Sexsmith Fire Dept, an explosion in Sexsmith in October 1997, and news from the Peace River Bible Institute in Sexsmith.
