Administrative history / Biographical sketch
The Eaglesham and District Drama Club’s first production was “Overtones”, “Address to Ladies’ Macramé”, “Newstime”, and “The Dear Departed” on May 30, 1981. However, the group’s organizational meeting did not occur until June 4, 1981, in the Tangent Church basement. The first executive was composed of JoAnn Cantwell (President), Steve Cregg (Vice-President), Leah Boreen (Secretary-Treasurer), and Greg Donaldson, Irma Lees (Donaldson), Faye Knitel, Annie Pawluski, Lilliane Lefebvre, and Pauline Cregg (directors). At their second meeting, the club decided to sponsor an annual Community Drama Award for a deserving student.
The club was unofficially known as the “One Night Stand”. Their symbol was a leaning lamp post and colours black and red. They aimed to offer programs in the community to promote participation in and appreciation for the performing arts, discover and develop local talent, entertain, and create an awareness of and concern for social and moral issues.
The group usually gave one or two performances a year, sometimes featuring a couple of plays, in Eaglesham, Tangent, and occasionally at festivals. Credits include: “Summer People”, “The Unseen”, and “The Al Slick Show” (April 1982), “A Good Time” and “Mr. Foot” (May 1983), “The Boor” (December 1983), “Monica” (January 1985), “She Walks in Beauty” (June 1985), “Spreading the News” and “Visitor from Forest Hills” (December 1985), “My Financial Career”, “To Open, Pry Cover”, “The Fishing Hat”, and “Parents’ Day” (April 1986), “World Without Men” and “Pyramus and Thisbe” (December 1986), various skits for the Eaglesham School, “I Can’t Imagine Tomorrow” (March 1987), “The Laboratory” and “The Gift of the Magi” (December 1987), “Pasque Flower” and “The Make-Up Artist” (March 1988), “Breeches from Bond Street” and “Trifles” (December 1988), “Have You Talked to the Trees, Lately?” (June 1989), “Indian” and “Hansel and Gretel Revisited” (December 1989), “Marred Bliss”, “When God Comes to Breakfast Don’t Burn the Toast”, and “A Fine Colored Easter Egg” (April 1990), “The Waste Disposal Unit” (April 1991), “I’ll Meet You in the Far Pasture” (August 1991), “Passacaglia” and “Quare Medicine” (March 1992), and “This Land Is Your Land” (April 1993). Some of the plays were written by local playwright and drama club member, Steve Cregg.
The Drama Club operated under the umbrella of the Eaglesham Cultural Society (incorporated 1977), allowing it to access additional grants. The Drama Club was financed by donations from local clubs, direct and indirect government grants, and performance admissions. Its expenses included audiovisual equipment, stage sections, props, makeup, hall rental, royalties, and festival fees.
Custodial history
The records were donated to South Peace Regional Archives by Greg Donaldson, a former member of the drama club, over five accessions in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. The photograph albums were originally created by Pauline Cregg and preserved by Greg Donaldson after the club folded. The videos were created and preserved by Greg Donaldson and include drama club productions as well as other Eaglesham events. The script for “I’ll Meet You in the Far Pasture” was written by Steve Cregg and based on the memories of Anne Donaldson, through whom Greg Donaldson acquired it. Other club records were preserved by Greg Donaldson after the club folded.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records relating to the operation of the Eaglesham and District Drama Club from 1981 to 1993. The records include club history, minutes, property lists and insurance, grant applications, financial statements, correspondence, script and planning materials, publicity materials, programs, and photographs and video recordings of club productions.

The records are divided into four series: Executive Records, Financial Records, Correspondence, and Productions.
The records were originally housed in a series of file folders by topic, with some loose records and books. Order has been imposed on the files themselves and some files have been combined and renamed by the Archivist. As far as possible, the original order within the files has been maintained.

The records include directions to the secretary treasurer, the club’s aims and objectives, a photocopy of the Eaglesham Cultural Society’s Certificate of Incorporation, a blank Eaglesham Cultural Society membership card, a drama club business card, a record of performances, minutes, an insurance policy and lists of property, and an equipment rental agreement form.
