Agency History
Immediately after assuming office in the summer of 1914, the first council of the newly-formed Village of Grande Prairie began a program of public works. The first action was to arrange for the sinking of a village well, as the entire population had been depending on the water in Bear Creek, which was almost unfit for use in the height of summer. Sidewalk building and street grading were also started immediately.
With a rapidly increasing population, many services were required. Streetlights were added to the main district in 1916 and Bear Creek was damned as a supply reservoir. A cemetery was laid out on land purchased from the Catholic Church mission. In 1920, the town acquired the electrical plant and struggled to provide electrical services until 1928, when Canadian Utilities purchased the franchise to provide the service.
The first primitive water mains and tapping to public buildings was provided in 1918, but in 1938 a proper water and sewer system was installed. Paving of the downtown core began in 1945. This was the beginning of an extensive public works program over the next decade of upgraded roads, improved storm drainage system, new water filtration system at the reservoir, and better street lighting.
In the 1950s, Grande Prairie was the first city in the province to develop a Joint Use Agreement between public and separate school boards and municipal government to share the use of school grounds, parks, recreational facilities and buildings.

Sets of plans were transferred to South Peace Regional Archives in 2011, 2012, and 2014. The textual records are still held at City Hall.
Scope and Content
The sous-fonds consists of Development permits and planning files, traffic regulation files, an Urban Parks Inventory for 1983, selected road and subdivision plans, a 2011 orthophoto map of the city, and building plans for the Provincial Building addition. Over-sized storage contains a wooden binder of Township Plans c. 1925 for Ranges 1-25, Townships 69-75; and a 1953 plan for the town of Grande Prairie prepared by the Town & Rural Planning Branch of the Alberta Department of Municipal Affairs.
