The series consists of the first page of minutes from the first meeting of the Association in 1955, a copy of minutes from a 1957 Alberta Association for Retarded Children meeting, various correspondence, 2 copies of ca. 1970 Summary Sheet of children at Barrydale House, an invitation to the 1959 official opening of the Grande Prairie School for Retarded Children, a copy of an invitation to the 1973 official opening of Swan Industries, a 1956 statement of Receipts and Disbursements, an undated copy of the floor plan of the workshop on Richmond Avenue, a copy of a history of the Association written by Myriam Uribe in 2001, and a photograph of the Association building ca. 2005. The records were gathered from a variety of sources for the 50th Anniversary website project.

Scope and content:

Digital copy of a hand-drawn floorplan for the Swan Industries Workshop building at 9614 Richmond Avenue.

Scope and content:

The series consists of specifications for and architectural drawings of the Barrydale House dormitory, promotional material for Recycle Plus and New Generations, general information about the Developmental Activity Program, and 134 photographs of client activities, events, programs, and businesses.

The series is divided in eight sub-series by program or activity: Client Events, Residential Services, Peace School of Hope, Swan Industries, Bottle Depot and Recycle Plus, New Generations, Developmental Activity Program, and Community Support Options.

The majority of the photographs are born-digital images dating from 2001-2006, with a few digitized photographs from previous decades. The photographs were selected by the Archivist from amongst several hundred images as the best representatives of the clients and programs, automatically discarding the poor quality images. The photographs were gathered from a variety of sources for use in the 50th Anniversary website project. The digital files and photographs were originally stored on several CDs. The selected files were transferred to a SanDisk USB 2.0 Flash Drive. The original disks containing the selected files have also been retained.

The photographs include primarily born-digital images dating from 2001 to 2006, but some are also digitized photographs, the originals dating from previous decades.

The sub-series consists of records relating to the residential services offered by the Association, from Barrydale Dorm to group homes and individual clients’ residences. The records include 16 digital photographs of the exteriors of many of the group homes and residences of Association clients (2001to 2005), “Specifications for Retarded Children’s Dormitory” (Barrydale Dorm, 1961), and 25 diazo and hand-drawn architectural drawings of the Dormitory for Retarded Children (1961 to 1962).

Scope and content:

The sub-series consists of material relating to the creation of the “Community From This Side: Murals and Mirrors A 50 Year Retrospective” website. The website was made in honour of the 50th Anniversary website of the Association. The records include release forms, interview notes, website text (various drafts), audio files, and video files.

The Release Forms were originally housed in binders in alphabetical order by surname, which has been maintained. Also included in these binders were client and guardian contact information. The Release Forms are restricted.

The Interview Notes were originally housed in binders in alphabetical order by surname, which was maintained. The interviews were conducted in 2005 and 2006, although there is some attached material from earlier years including eulogies, notes from previous interviews, journals, and memories. Duplicate copies of the interview notes were discarded. The Interview Notes are restricted.

The website text (files named “Finals” and consisting of the profiles of clients (present and deceased), staff, board members, parents and family of clients, and community members), was written in 2005 and 2006. Hard copies of the profiles were originally housed in binders in primarily alphabetical order by surname, which has been maintained. The website text, including profiles and Association history, also exists in digital form as .doc (Microsoft Word) files.

The audio and video files were created in 2005 and 2006 during interviews of clients, staff, board members, parents and family of clients, and community members. The video files also include clips relating to Association programs. The audio files were originally .dvf (Sony compressed voice) and .wav files and the video files were originally .wmv (Windows Media Video) files.

Portions of the website text and all of the audio and video files were originally stored on several CDs. The Archivist went through the files to weed out duplicate files and files containing duplicate information and transferred selected files to a SanDisk USB 2.0 Flash Drive. The original disks containing the selected files have also been retained.

The sub-series consists of textual records relating to Barry’s Bucknell’s Roast (1988), including planning notes, speaking notes, invitations, a guest list, and a draft program, and 72 photographs of staff and board members and their activities and social events dating from predominantly the 1980s and early 2000s. Arrangement:

The photographs are arranged within the files in roughly chronological order.

Many of the photographs were born-digital images dating from 2001 to 2006, although some have been digitized from prints. The photographs were selected by the Archivist from amongst several hundred images as the best representatives of staff members and staff events, automatically discarding the poor quality images. The photographs were gathered from a variety of sources for use in the 50th Anniversary website project. The digital files and photographs were originally stored on several CDs. The selected files were transferred to a SanDisk USB 2.0 Flash Drive. The original disks containing the selected files have also been retained.

The series consists of lists of clippings by year, copies of catalogue cards, copies of articles in the Grande Prairie Daily Herald Tribune (only those listing articles not included in the clippings files were retained), and copies of newspaper clippings from 1954 to 2005, with the best coverage being between 1954 and 1963. The series is arranged in roughly chronological order and duplicate clippings have been discarded.
