Administrative history / Biographical sketch

Marion Marie Heller was born in 1921 to Eward Heller and Laura Davis near Beaverlodge, AB. She attended Appleton School, a one-room log school southwest of Beaverlodge, until grade 8 and then went on to Beaverlodge High School (grades 9 to 12), and Normal School in Edmonton to train as a teacher. She qualified to teach grades 1 to 11. Her first schools included Appleton, Elmworth, North Sexsmith and Kleskun Hill.

In 1944, Marion joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service and became Wren Heller W3700. She served as a Supply Assistant until 1946, and after discharge taught in Victoria while she waited to rejoin the Navy. The Navy, however, continued its policy of not accepting women when there was no war. After waiting for five years for the Navy to change its policy, Marion gave up on her hopes for a navy career and joined the Air Force in 1951.

Marion returned to the Peace Country in 1953 and accepted a position as principal of Montrose School for two years. She then married Vernon Hill from Rio Grande, and since 1962 has lived on their farm near Beaverlodge. They have two sons who now farm and one daughter. Marion continued her teaching career in the Beaverlodge Regional Junior-Senior High School (1965-1969) and taught in Wembley till 1981 as librarian and junior high school teacher.

Marion loves to travel–by car, bus, train, plane and cruise ship. Because of her interest in many crafts, she has taught sewing and other handwork to her grandchildren, and gives classes in tatting and sandpainting to anyone who is interested.

Marion died on November 27, 2018.
