Biographical Sketch

Marie (McFetridge) Hennig was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England, in 1924 and came to Grande Prairie with her mother and father in 1926. They settled in the Crystal Creek area. She attended high school in Grande Prairie where where she excelled in softball and track and field, then worked in the Bank of Montreal . Soon she became involved in the Stagette Club, the Majorettes and the softball team. She married Max Henning, a WWII airforce veteran, in 1948, and they had three children: Cam, Donna, and Brenda. Marie worked at the town hall, then for the County, and from 1962-1992 for the Provincial Government. Max and Marie established Mac Arabians, raising, training and showing their Arabian horses and Marie became a very experienced horse lady, a leader in the Gymkhana Club, South Peace Horse Show, 4-H, and teacher of the first Grande Prairie Rodeo Queen. She rode in the Jasper Centennial Trail Ride in 1967. Marie also loved curling, bridge, golfing, and spending time with her 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Marie died of cancer July 17, 2005.

The records were donated by Marie Henning in May 2005.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of copies of news articles related to family members, clubs that Marie was involved in, sports news, and news of the local boys during WWII, the obituary and copy of the tribute at her funeral; and photographs and booklets related to her involvement in the Stagette Club.

Series 176.01 Scrapbook series. — 1939-1947. — .5 cm of textual records.The series consists of copies of newsarticles from a scrapbook, including news of ball teams and hockey teams of the 1940s, news of Grande Prairie men in the R.C.A.F. during WW11, news of the Majorettes and Stagettes clubs and an article about Mrs. Mc Fetridge and Dr. John S. Mc Fetridge. It also includes a program from a Grande Prairie High School concert of 1941, 7 booklets and 3 convention programs from the National Association of Stagette Clubs.

Series 176.02 Stagettes series. — 1946-1958. — 1 cm of textual records, 13 photographs.The Stagettes were formed in 1932, starting with a small group in Saskatoon. Eventually a national club, its purpose was two fold: to engage in charitable enterprises and to advance and improve the social and educational life of its members. Membership was open to single women 20 years and over. Once married, the member became an honorary member. One national project was the Maidstone Street School project which supported a school in the slums of London during WWII. Marie was the Governor during 1946-47 and the National Convention was held in Grande Prairie in 1947. The Grande Prairie group was still active in 1958.The series consists of 13 photographs of Stagette functions including conventions in Vancouver and Grande Prairie, Stagette history and bylaws booklet, newsletters and convention programs, and a summary of the Stagettes’ history written by Marie.
