Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Ed Gummer came to the Peace Country from Ontario in 1912, by way of the Long Trail. He homesteaded in the Buffalo Lakes district on SE 28-73-7-W6 and worked on Walter McFarlane’s survey crew to supplement his income.
In 1918, Ed returned to Ontario to marry Eva Laver. The young couple returned to Buffalo Lakes, where they farmed for the next half a century. Ed and Eva had four children: Howard in 1921, Jean in 1922, Jack in 1926, and Gerald in 1929.
Custodial history
The photographs were donated to the Grande Prairie Museum in 1994 by Jean Donison, daughter of Ed Gummer. Jean’s husband, Ambrose Donison, also features in these photographs. In 2000, the records were transferred to the Grande Prairie Regional Archives.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of photographs of the Gummer home and farm and early pioneering prints of people, places and events around Buffalo Lake. One photograph of Ed Gummer doing the Sunday laundry while traveling the Long Trail is included.
