John Thomas (Leo) Pantel was the son of Arthur and Pearl Pantel, born March 22, 1921 in Fort Smith, North West Territories. At the advent of World War II, he began a career as a wing assembler in the Can Car & Foundry in Fort William, Ontario. He later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (No. 7 R.C. Calgary) and served as a pilot flying missions into Europe. His active duty commenced February 20, 1942, and he was released to the Reserve August 29, 1947. During the war he received his pilot’s badge, a war medal, a Defense medal, and a C.V.S.M. & Clasp. After the war, he returned to Widewater, Alberta with an English war bride. He worked for many years for the Canadian National Railways in Edmonton, but his English wife returned to England soon after the war.
