Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Spirit River Lodge No. 116 was organized in 1917, but instituted in 1920. The first District Deputy Grand Master (DDGM) from Spirit River was R.R. MacLeod in 1921, and the first annual district meeting was held in 1924. DDGMs were the representatives of the Grand Master, whose residence was probably in Calgary or Edmonton. The DDGM was elected annually by all the lodges in the district once a year. In 1925, the Spirit River Lodge took over the Dramatic Hall as their first lodge, and in 1965, they moved into the converted liquor store on main street. In the early 1970s, they decided to sell the building and moved into the basement of the United Church, and in the 1990s, they amalgamated with Fairview Masonic Lodge.
Custodial history
When Spirit River Lodge #116 amalgamated with Fairview, they left their collection of portraits in the basement of the United Church. In 2000, the United Church donated them to Spirit River Museum, who in turn offered them to the archives.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a collection of photographs of the District Deputy Grand Masters (DDGMs) from the Spirit River Lodge, one of 13 lodges in District 13, with a few additional photographs of Grand Masters. Each lodge in District 13 would have its own collection of these photographs.
