Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Wanham Board of Trade was organized in April 1929. Its main object was to promote the area and consolidate actions for better roads, bridges and rail service. In the community the board planned locations for the garbage dump, the sports ground, water supply, streets and avenues. The board worked with other boards of trade in the area and was a founding member of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of the Peace River District, which was formed in 1955. After more than 40 years of promoting the community of Wanham, the Board of Trade disbanded in 1972.
Custodial history
Ed Prevost, last president of the Board of Trade, left the records with Wally Tansem when he moved from Wanham. Ed Harrington, another past president, added two phonograph records to the collection. Mr. Tansem donated the records to the archives in March of 2000.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of minutes, correspondence, financial records, foundational documents from the Peace River Associated Boards of Trade, and news clippings regarding the upgrading of roads in the Peace Country. The Whitecourt cut-off and the Friendship Train of 1948 are two major issues in this collection. Two phonograph records promote the Whitecourt cut-off.

Date: 1947-1955 (date of creation) Scope and content: The series consists of constitution, by-laws, minutes and resolutions of the Peace River Associated Boards of Trade (a.k.a. the Central and Northern Chambers of Commerce); minutes, maps, data and the Statement of Policy adopted at the Highway Conference in Edmonton in December 1948; the 1949 Hudson Bay Route Association submission to the Royal Commission on Transportation; correspondence and reports of further meetings from the Peace River Continuing Committee of the Peace River Highway Conference and the Coast Rail Outlet Committee. Date: 1948-1950 (date of creation) Scope and content: The series consists of two phonograph records promoting the proposed highway 49, and copies of new articles from the Grande Prairie Herald Tribune and the Edmonton Journal regarding the issue of roads in the Peace Country. Specifically, the articles are on the Whitecourt cut-off and the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce “Friendship Train”, which spent a week touring 66 businessmen and chamber officials through the Peace Country.
