The big news story this week was the return of Sgt. Harper & party with the prisoner Asa Hunting (Grande Prairie Herald, January 27, 1914), which Bill Scott beat me to in his story “The Runaway Lovers of Nose Mountain“. There wasn’t much other news on the front page, but I did notice an odd little poem, which turned out to be an ad for a new kind of lamp. I’ve noticed that quite often ads, that don’t always look like ads, are fairly common on the front page of the early newspaper. This lamp is even described as being better than electric, which I personally find hard to believe, since I always thought the hissing of a mantle lamp could get pretty annoying!
