In the July 10, 1936 Herald, a large first page ad announced the introduction of a coloured comic section to the Herald, to begin the following week. The same day as that exciting event was to happen, the Palace Cafe was set to reopen after being closed for more than two months for extensive alterations. Chromium plating must have been new then, as it seemed every bit of metal in the place was chrome plated. To top it off, the largest neon sign in the north country would mark the location of the Palace. I remember the Palace Cafe well, but don’t recall much about the decor – what I think about is the good food. My favourites were the coconut cream pie, a doughnut a la mode (made with a big fluffy bread doughnut, their tomato soup, and breaded veal cutlets. A few years ago I accidentally made a coconut cream pie that tasted just like the ones at the Palace Cafe – what a treat it was.
