The headline on Bill Scott’s feature in the November 12 Herald Tribune was “Could the Peace Go It Alone?” His article referred to unrest in the Peace in the mid 1960s. This wasn’t the first time there had been talk of seceding. The newspaper of November 25, 1927 featured an article outlining the reasons why this was a good idea. The interesting thing then was that the “new” Province of Peace River extended all the way to the Pacific! The big issue was an outlet to the coast for the grain produced in the Peace River Country and the mineral resources of northern British Columbia, which were undeveloped due to lack of transportation. This desire for a “coast outlet” went on for decades.
