Optimistic items on the front page of August 11, 1914 included the improved appearance of a local hotel with a coat of paint, a bit of a novelty in those days apparently, and a new cafe opening which had a Pitner lighting system to add to its “brilliancy”. Another item invited everyone to attend an Ice Cream Lawn Social, with a tennis tournament and music during the evening. On page 2, however, there is an article stating that food assistance could be obtained if “through misfortune or miscalculation” it was required, and outlined the procedure to follow.
