Philippe (Sam) Lapensee was born in Killam, Ab. on June 13, 1922 and moved north to Falher, Ab. in 1928. In 1941 he joined the R.C.A.F. and was transferred to Tobray, Newfoundland with the No.1 Air Sea Rescue Squadron. As Newfoundland wasn’t a Canadian province at the time, Philip returned to Canada and was transferred to the R.C.A.F. reserve.
After returning to Falher Philip opened a jewelry store that he operated on and off until 1970. In 1952 Philip married Helen Cote. In 1964 the family purchased the farm next to the ferry crossing where they operated a family market garden for several years. Philip also operated a gravel business.
