Agency History
The organizational meeting for the Sexsmith Home & School Association was held at Sexsmith School on June 24, 1957, with Mrs. H. Magnuson, Vice-President of Home & School for northern Alberta in attendance. Twenty-eight parents were present for that first meeting, electing Mr. Don Masterson as chairman, Mrs. Don Coleman as Vice-Pres., and Janet Ophus as Secretary-Treasurer. Other parents were given responsibilities on Program, Membership, Lunch and Publicity Committees. Meetings would be held in a designated classroom.
The Home & School Association lobbied for better education and facilities for their children by passing resolutions regarding issues such as better facilities and presenting them to the County School Board. It was also an opportunity for the school to communicate with the parents on matters such as high school credits needed for university, and to discuss issues such as homework. Monthly meetings included programs which ranged from informational sessions by the principal or superintendent, discussions between parents and teachers, films to reports on Home & School workshops held throughout the province. Parents in the Home & School Assoc. catered lunches at school functions such as Parents Day and ATA Workshops, and even grad banquets. Once a year, a fund-raiser was held, the money to be used for Christmas treats for the students, sports equipment and Home & School activities.
Even the teachers and children were involved as the home room having the most parents at a Home & School meeting was given a banner to display for the next month. Home & School also awarded annual Honour Pins to students receiving an average of more than 70% in Grades Nine to Twelve, and a Scholarship to the highest mark in Grade IX. High school students were invited to a career night with speakers for various careers.
Sexsmith Home & School Association was affiliated with the Alberta Home & School Federation. Membership fees of $1.00 per capita were divided between the local and provincial branches. The Sexsmith branch ceased to operate in 1967.
Custodial History
The records were preserved by the Sexsmith Museum and deposited in Grande Prairie Regional Archives in 2004.
