Administrative history / Biographical sketch

The Grande Prairie Kinette Club was founded at an organizational meeting February13, 1957. There were 20 charter members. The first executive consisted of Fran Hite, president; Jean Leslie, vice-president; Sylvia Shultz, secretary; Willa Mitchell, treasurer; Marj Toews, director; Lenore Eager, drector. To be eligible for membership, a prospective Kinette had to be the wife of a Kinsmen and under forty years of age. At forty years of age, she could become a privileged member, entitled to all club privileges except holding office. Meetings were held once a month. The original service project undertaken was serving the residents of Pioneer Lodge by having monthly events such as bingos, parties, picnics. The club honored their commitment to this Lodge for the duration of their existence. Other service projects included fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis, stuffing envelopes for the TB Christmas Seal Campaign, and canvassing for the Heart fund and CNIB. Other fundraising events were bake sales, flea markets, My Fair Lady Fashion Bingos, a Christmas Coloring Book, a jewelry lottery, a Christmas gift wrapping, a Kinettes’ Cookbook, sponsoring a candidate for City and County Queen Contests and helping the Kinsmen stage annual conventions including Timber Takin’ Daze in 1975, radio auctions, children’s Christmas parties, hosting the Wally Byan Caravan. They always took time for their own entertainment which included curling bonspiels and birthday parties. In 1995 the Kinettes and the Kinsmen joined to create the KIN Club.
