Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Gordon Pearcy was born in Grande Prairie in 1927. As a twelve -year-old, he remembers the excitement of the sudden increase in people and activity with the establishment of the Army Base in Grande Prairie during WWII. In 1943, while still in school, he began working for CFGP and in 1945 he was working there full time. Irene Ritchie was a young graduate nurse when she came to Grande Prairie to work in 1951 and the next year she and Gordon were married. As Gordon was the “bread- winner” for the family, due to his brother’s illness since the early 1940s and his father’s death in 1947, they chose to live with his family in the family residence. Gordon became parts manager for Union Tractor from 1952-1955 and Irene worked as a registered nurse in the Grande Prairie Hospital. Stanley passed away in 1952 of a rheumatic heart condition which had kept him bedridden. On Valentine’s Day, 1953, David Gordon Pearcy was born, and on April 19, 1954, Linda Jane Pearcy was born. Gordon joined the militia that year (D-Coy – The Royal Edmonton Regiment) as a private and retired in 1967 as Captain and Company Commander. In 1955 Gordon returned to CFGP as Sales Manager and by 1977 was named Manager of the station. Christmas 1956 saw the family move into their first house and in 1957 they added water and sewer and natural gas. On May 16, 1958, Daniel Arthur Pearcy was born and their family was complete. Gordon celebrated CFGP’s 50th anniversary in 1987 which included meeting and escorting the Duke and Duchess of York who had been invited for the occasion. Gordon spent 43 years with CFGP. He was active in many organizations -20 years as trustee for the Grande Prairie Public School District, member of the Lake Saskatoon Lodge #106 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, a Rotarian for over 25 years and is an active member of St. Paul’s United Church. Irene served 25 years with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a nurse and later as a director of volunteer services, and member of the Hospital Auxiliary Association. and was involved with the United Church women. She also became a well known artist and member of the Grande Prairie Art Club and later Artists North Soc. And a board member of the Grande Prairie Arts and Crafts Center for Creative Arts.
Now retired, Gordon and Irene have spent time volunteering and since 1996 have spent winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Back in Grande Prairie they enjoy visits from grandchildren and great grandchildren. Irene Pearcy died September 7, 2011.
