Administrative history / Biographical sketch
Ole and Kasbara Lunde, their three sons Jorgen (born July 12, 1914), Arne (born May 7, 1916), and Olaf, and Ole’s sister Marie left Langhamm, Norway July 5, 1927, arriving in Sexsmith on July 30. In February 1928, they filed on a homestead in the La Glace area. Their only daughter, Lilly, was born August 27, 1931. When Ole’s health no longer allowed him to do heavy farm labour, Jorgen took over the family farm. Ole died in 1962, followed by Kasbara in 1973 at the age of 80.
Jorgen continued farming until 1977, when he sold the land and moved into La Glace. In 1988 he moved to Wild Rose Manor in Grande Prairie. Jorgen died October 1, 1995 at the age of 81.
Olaf Gudmund Lunde served in World War II, returning to La Glace in 1946 and buying a quarter next to his parents. Olaf married Gina Saastad on January 2, 1959 and they had three children, Kathy, Judy, and Ole. Olaf farmed until 1967 when he sold his land to Arne and moved to the Hythe area. Olaf later moved to British Columbia and died in Dawson Creek in January 1981 at the age of 61. Kathy married Rocky Purych and as of 1981, she, Judy, and Ole were all living in Prince George.
Lilly married Lindsay Fowler in 1950. They had four children: Karen, Les, Arlene, and Dean. Lilly died December 20, 1998 at the age of 67. Karen married Greg Chrenek, Les married Marg __, and Arlene married Sam Walker.
Arne Johan Lunde was a truck driver with Swanberg Trucking starting in 1940 and served in the army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. On March 30, 1950 Arne and Nell “Marie” Rohn of Valhalla were married. Arne bought NW 20-73-8 W6th and began farming in 1946. In 1953 the Lundes bought NE 30-73-8 W6th from the VLA and in September of the same year Arne became a County of Grande Prairie school bus driver, a position he held for more than 30 years. SW 29-73-8 W6th was added to their holdings in 1963. The Lundes continued farming until they sold their land in 1973, moving into La Glace in 1974. Arne and Marie moved to Grande Prairie in 1992 and Arne died April 14, 2010 at the age of 93 followed by Marie on February 26, 2011 at the age of 81. Arne and Marie had five children: Arden (born 1950), Janis (born 1952), Janis (born January 1954), Lola (born 1958), and Iris (born 1964). Arden and the elder Janis were tragically killed in a house fire January 18, 1953. Janis (younger) married Delwyn Postman in November 1975, Lola married Rodney Supernault, and Iris married Joe Gomes.
Custodial history
The material was deposited in the Sexsmith and District Museum by Janice Lunde after the sale of the Delwyn Postman farm. In June 2009, the Sexsmith and District Museum transferred the material to South Peace Regional Archives. Records of the Postman family have been removed to form the Postman Family fonds (515).
Scope and content
The fonds consists of personal papers and photographs belonging to members of the Lunde family. The fonds includes a 1927 Norwegian passport issued to Marie Bernfine Jorgensen Lunde, Olaf Lunde’s 1941 National War Services Regulations (Recruits), Olaf Lunde’s 1952 car insurance policy, the County of Grande Prairie’s 1960 Auditor’s Financial Statement and Annual Report of the Agricultural Service Board addressed to Jorenson O. Lunde, the 1961 United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Limited List of Members and Nomination Paper Sub-District “G-31”, and a Christmas card and note sent in 1979 from Olaf to J. Lunde at La Glace.
The fonds also includes thirteen photographs believed to be of or have been sent to the Lunde family, although some of them may be Postman family photographs, since the two collections were mixed together at one point. The photographs include school, family, and wedding portraits, a platoon photograph, and photographs of family members and houses.
