Administrative history / Biographical sketch

Anita Blimkie was born in Grande Prairie in April, 1927 to Matilda (Frank) and Lawrence Blimkie. Her grandfather, Gustav Blimkie, came into the Peace Country in 1912, before there was a railroad, to file on a homestead. In 1914 he returned to Ontario and brought his family, including his wife Annie (Hanniman) and five children: Lawrence, Hervert, Frances, Norman, Gertrude, and Austin. One more son, Archie, was born after they came to the South Peace. Annie and Archie died in the 1918 Spanish Influenza epidemic.

Lawrence farmed until 1930, when he moved to Grande Prairie to work for hotelier Frank Donald. Lawrence and Matilda had five children: Anita, Verna, Edna, Kay, and Ivan. Anita attended Montrose School, then Grande Prairie High School, and finally the Grande Prairie Business College. She taught school for a time, but also worked in the $0.05 -$1.00 Store from 1959-1962, and the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool from 1962-1963. In 1963, she began to work for J.H. Bennion’s accounting firm (became Meyers Norris Penny) and was there for 30 years, until she retired in 1993. She died in 2011.

Custodial history

The records were donated to the South Peace Regional Archives by Anita’s brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Evelyn Blimkie, in 2011.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of seven lined school scribblers containing Anita’s itemized expenses for each month from December 1958 to January 1964. They include such expenses as rent, clothing, charities, and food. Each entry is itemized, e.g. tomatoes, .30; 2 yds Organdie, 1.58; Sunday collection, 2.00; 1 bottle “222” tablets, 1.25; present for Mr. McBryan, 1.66; etc. At the back of each scribbler is a list of the cheques Anita received for working, first from the the Alberta $0.05 to $1.00 Store, then the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool.
