Administrative history / Biographical sketch
The first issue of the Hythe Headliner was printed October 15, 1973, subtitled “Pioneer Home & District News”. From this issue it is evident that the paper was intended to provide an activity for the residents of the Home, as well as give them credit for the contributions they had made to Hythe and to Society. The editorial begins with, “Many people never seem to warrant a news story. Every contribution they make to society is overlooked…” It goes on to say, “The aim of the Hythe Headliner” is to change all this. In each publication you will see an article featuring the life of a Senior Citizen. We think you people are interesting and news-worthy…” and concludes with, “Since this is your paper you will be gathering news, folding and distributing the “Headliner.”
The Hythe Headliner was published about every two weeks and contained stories about the residents at the Hythe Pioneer Home and families in the district, histories of surrounding communities and their organizations, resident and staff birthdays, recent arrivals, news and reports of activities at the Home, obituaries, inspirational poetry, and advertisements. The last issue of this first appears to be October 31, 1977.
In 1988, Family & Community Support Services for the Village of Hythe brought the paper back to life. This time it was a community newspaper containing community events, obituaries, letters to the editor, news from various organizations such as the Hythe Pioneer Home, Hythe and Valhalla Libraries, Family & Community Support Services, RCMP, school columns, sports, and general information. The first issue on March 10, 1988 invited the community to participate in the production, describing it as “a community cement”. The editor was Gail Gillingham, and it was 8 pages of 11 X 14 paper. By 1994, it was up to 24 pages, but in later years back to around 16 pages. Later editors included Bonnie Joyes, Charlene Wold and Gisela Everton. In 2014, the Hythe Headliner was purchased by the Beaverlodge West County News and ceased to exist.
